In 1995 I worked for one of the first online companies Dialog Information Services and I had my first child, Geoffrey. In 1999 he was diagnosed with autism. Since my job at the time was teaching people how to research information I started to learn all I could about autism. This led to writing a book called Starting Sensory Therapy: Fun Activities for the Home and Classroom. My goal in writing the book was to provide easy to understand information and an accessible tool for growth and development. In 2007 this book won a Disney iParenting award which led to speaking at a variety of conferences.
My goal is not to champion one specific therapy. I believe each person is unique and our approach to intervention should always be person based, not therapy based. As I spoke at conferences I shared this perspective and sold my book, and then I started selling other books, and then other tools developed by teachers and therapists, and the rest is history.
My goal has always been to partner with educators and families to help the kids they serve build skills that open up opportunities. This goal has led us to creative partnerships with therapists, teachers, and parents to provide innovative products that support success. Our advisory board includes a former teacher of the year recipient from LAUSD (the second largest school district in the US), adults on the spectrum, as well as therapists with over 30 years of experience working with individuals on the spectrum.
Today my children work with us. Geoffrey is highly visual and loves photography. Many of the photos that you see on the website were taken by him. Grace is an illustrator and has drawn many of the icons and illustrated several of the social skills comics in our sets. As we continue to grow our mission remains the same: to help you open up opportunities. Many of us have an intimate connection to autism. This is more than a job to us, we feel it is our calling and we look forward to assisting you.
