If you suspect your child has autism its important to seek an evaluation as soon as possible. Start by talking to your pediatrician, ask for a referral to see a developmental pediatrician or another specialist, and contact your local early intervention agency (for children under 3) or public school (for children 3 and older) to find out if your child qualifies for intervention services.
Early intervention can make a huge difference in a person's life. The sooner intervention starts the better chance your child has at developing vital skills. Every child should be screened for autism spectrum disorders at the 18-, 24-, and 30-months. You should seek additional screening if a child is at high risk for an autism spectrum disorder. Children at a higher risk for autism are those with a sibling or parent with an autism spectrum disorder or if symptoms warrant.
